James R. Hines’ research is focused upon various aspects of taxation.

Hines is currently The L. Hart Wright Collegiate Professor of Law, Richard A. Musgrave Collegiate Professor of Economics, the research director of the Office of Tax Policy Research in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, and the Co-Director of the Law and Economics Program, all at Michigan University. He is also a research associate for the National Bureau of Economic Research, the research director of the International Tax Policy Forum, and the co-editor of the Journal of Public Economics Prior to joining the Michigan faculty at 1997, he taught and Princeton University and Harvard University.

He earned both a BA and MA in economics from Yale University and a PhD from Harvard University.
