Mario Small is one of the nation’s leading sociologists. His research focused on the creation of community and social capital in urban spaces. He has published two books on the topic: Villa Victoria: The Transformation of Social Capital in a Boston Barrio and Unanticipated Gains: Origins of Network Inequality in Everyday Life. Both titles have won the C. Wright Mills Best Book Award, making Professor Small the only person to receive the award twice. A native of Panama, he holds a doctorate in sociology from Harvard (2001) and attained his bachelor's from Carleton College (1996). He joined the University of Chicago faculty in 2006 after spending 4 years teaching at Princeton.
